Canyon Ladies

Joni Mitchell's song "Ladies of the Canyon" from her eponymous 1970 album describes three women who live in Los Angeles' Laurel Canyon. A center for the counterculture movement, the canyon was home to to legendary figures like Graham Nash, Frank Zappa, and Mitchell.



First is Trina, who "fills her drawing book with line. Sewing lace on widows' weeds, and filigree on leaf and vine."



Then there's Annie. "Annie sits you down to eat. She always makes you welcome here. Cats and babies round her feet and all are fat and none are thin."



Finally, Estrella, "circus girl comes wrapped in songs and gypsy shawls. Songs like tiny hammers hurled at beveled mirrors in empty halls."
